The Zikr Dance Ensemble offers a spectrum of works that pay homage to the transcendent nature of dance as employed by many different world cultures throughout history.
Along with original and contemporary dance/theatre realizations based on metaphysical concepts that includes original music, breathtaking costumes and stunning slide and graphic digital projections and special effects, Zikr Dance Ensemble also showcases the work of internationally acclaimed choreographers. The company seeks to enhance the appreciation for the unity of the human spirit and provide a unique multi-media artistic experience of the many ways that diverse spiritual and cultural traditions seek profound meaning, beauty and a conduit to the divine through dance.
Founded in 2009, Zikr employs world-class classically trained and contemporary dancers to perform original, dramatic and contemporary works, combined with 21st century technology and multi-disciplinary collaborations. Zikr creates a bridge between time and space to bring the ancient into the new millennium where audiences can experience the universal search for the connection to the divine.
Every season, Zikr produces full-scale performances that are performed at an array of venues both here in the Denver metro area and throughout Colorado mountain communities through its acclaimed Rural Colorado Community Tour Program. In addition, Outreach programs serve diverse communities and audiences with limited access to the arts through a variety of educational programs. One hour mini-performances for students and seniors, master classes for dance students, free in-studio rehearsals and choreographic workshops serve the broader community. Over the past four years, Zikr has experienced significant growth in the number of annual performances with a corresponding increase in both budget and the contract length for dancers. Zikr has also grown significantly in its recognition and profile both in the metro area and throughout the state.
In recent years, Zikr has begun including iconic works by other renowned contemporary choreographers to enhance its own distinctive original repertoire. The first to be performed by Zikr was “Mobile” a ballet choreographed in 1968 by Tomm Ruud, former dancer and choreographer with Ballet West and San Francisco Ballet. For the company's 2025/2026 Season, Zikr Dance Ensemble will be taking one of the company's most monumental artistic steps in its 16-year history. Zikr will be acquiring the Pas de Deux from internationally acclaimed Belgian/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s full-length ballet, “In Memoriam”. Zikr is excited to bring this world class level of artistry and unique vision to numerous venues throughout the metro area and state for its 2025/26 Season.
Zikr Dance Ensemble’s 2027 Spring Season, entitled Labyrinth, will feature a world premier by Artistic Director David Taylor of the same name, along with audience favorites Light Codes, Sadhu, Oracle and Altar
Dates, locations & ticket information will be available at zikrdance.com in January
